______________________________________________
assembled gem, cut jewel manufactured from two or three pieces of stone that are cemented together to create a larger stone with increased value. A doublet is composed of two pieces of material, usually cemented together at the girdle (the stone’s widest part): if the two pieces are of the same material, the gem is called a true doublet; if they are different, with the crown (above the girdle) being genuine and the pavilion (below the girdle) an inferior stone or glass, it is called a false doublet.
Also referred to as “synthetic,” lab-created gemstones are in fact real and genuine; just man-made instead of mined from the earth. Believe it or not, lab gemstones are chemically, physically, and optically identical to their natural counterparts!

Care of Assembled Gems

The care and wearing recommendations for assembled stones vary with the materials involved and the method of assembly, but certainly ultrasonic and steam cleaning should be avoided. Anything that might attack or weaken the bonding or otherwise compromise the integrity of the piece is to be avoided, including high temperatures. It would also be prudent to have such stones removed when jewelry containing them is repaired or sized. In general, erring on the side of caution is wise.
